18.1. Введение

Мнение о природе далекого будущего как в отношении вселенной, так и в отношении человечества в конечном счете зависит от нашего мнения о природе бытия, иначе говоря, о возможных типах онтологии. Мы можем ожидать, что некоторые виды существ и явлений будут существовать вечно, а другие нет, вне зависимости от судьбы физической вселенной. Тесно связан с этим вопрос о существах и явлениях, которые могли предшествовать вселенной и в некотором смысле сделать возможным ее бытие, независимо от того, означает ли это предсуществование также и возможность пережить вселенную. Здесь мы сталкиваемся с одним из обычных парадоксов, описывающих происходящее и существующее: понятия «до начала» и «происходит» не имеют смысла там, где еще нет времени, однако мы чувствуем потребность мыслить в терминах некоего временного бытия даже там, где не существует вселенной и связанных с нею временных отношений [166]. Человеческий язык плохо приспособлен для обсуждения таких вопросов: мы обращаемся к таким областям, к которым, возможно, неприменимы обычные понятия времени и бытия.
